PriaPlex® - To Prevent Hair Loss Associated with Aging

All-natural PriaPlex® is an advanced, patented herbal formula designed to support healthy hair and prevent hair loss associated with aging. PriaPlex is the first therapeutic food invention approved by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for inhibiting hair loss. The patent covers both production methods and product functions. Functions included in the patent description are that the product reduces hair loss and promotes hair growth, improves skin texture, and enhances vitality. PriaPlex combines a nourishing blend of herbs that not only halt hair loss and increase hair growth, but also benefit general health. Case studies have shown that patients experienced increased levels of vitality and energy after 1 to 2 weeks, and had improved skin tone and texture after 6 to 8 weeks.

Background

The hair follicle is one of the most active organisms in the body, and healthy hair requires healthy follicles. The hair follicles are located in the dermal papillary layer. During the anagen growing phase, the hair shaft grows out from the follicles at an angle through the dermis and epidermis, extending out to the surface of the skin.

The bottom spherical part of the hair follicle, or bulb, swells, and forms a claw-like network. The center of the bulb is the hair papilla, an extension from the dermal papilla. The hair papilla is full of capillaries that provide the nutrients needed for hair growth.

In later stages the hair follicles enter the catagen phase (cessation of growth phase), the telogen rest phase, and then shedding of hair, which completes a cycle.

During the catagen phase, the hair follicles no longer produce melanin nor divide to produce hair growth. The dermal papilla experiences gradual reduction of local blood vessels and the loss of the Stratum basale (base cells).

Then, the cycle begins again with another anagen phase. Hair follicles gradually move up again restoring the spherical shape of the bulb plus returning to the papillary layer. The length of the hair follicle life cycle depends on the hair, the scalp that hosts hair follicles, and the general body health condition.

In Chinese medical terms, the problem of hair loss is treated at both the “surface” and “root” levels. The “surface” level is the hair and scalp, while the “root” level is the general body health and constitution.

While a normal hair life cycle lasts about 3-7 years, the small, miniaturized follicles of typical male baldness can last from a few months to two years. For aging hair follicles, the life cycle has an extra window period between the anagen and telogen phases.

The keys to prevent hair loss and promote hair growth are to extend the anagen phase, lengthen the catagen phase and shorten the telogen phase.

It's a complicated matter to adjust the various phases of hair follicle growth cycle by herbal, medicinal or other interventions. Furthermore, modern scientific research has only begun to determine the many factors and hormonal changes involved in hair growth.

For example, the third and fifth fibroblast growth factors (FGF-3, FGF-5) can contribute to the shift from growth to degradation of hair follicles. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) and the seventh fibroblast growth factor (FGF -7) can boost hair follicles resting in the telogen phase into the growing anagen period.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), endothelial cell growth factor (EGF), and fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF-7) may all help extend the anagen growth period.

Today, these growth factors and hormones are often used to compare hair growth modifiers or to determine their mechanisms of action.

However, given the gap between basic research (in vitro) and clinical applications (oral), the current treatments are limited to topical hair growth products such as saw palmetto extract, which in vitro inhibits 5α-reductase. This extract can reduce the dihydrotestosterone testosterone but has no effect when taken orally. Therefore it is commonly used in topical hair-growth liquid applications.

Adenosine, an enhancer for the hair follicle papilla of FGF-7, is another popular ingredient in topical hair tonics.

Finally, there are the Advangen plant extracts based hair creams, which inhibit FGF-5, the protein that triggers the transition of hair follicles from the growth to resting phases. [Advangen is a group of topical applications including the herbs Sanguisorbae officinalis and Eriobotya japonica from an Australian company. They sell a lot in Japan and other Asian countries.]

Nevertheless, these are all treatments merely for the “surface” [scalp and hair] and do not include “root” treatment [for general body health].

Numerous clinical cases have shown that the Taiwan-US patent formula PriaPlex, if used uninterruptedly at sufficient dosage, can stop abnormal hair loss within four to eight weeks.

New hair typically will grow at the vertex, or top of the head, in three to six months time.

In some cases original hair color begins to reappear as part of the healthy new hair growth within six months after starting to use PriaPlex
